The emotional trailer for Roadrunner, a new documentary examining the life and legacy of late chef Anthony Bourdain – often in his own words – has been released.

The ‘culinary bad boy’, who described himself as ‘the antidote’ to other ‘cuddly and adorable’ TV chefs, was also known as a traveller, presenter and writer, with his popular shows No Reservations and Parts Unknown a hit with TV audiences, and his 2000 delve into restaurant life, Kitchen Confidential, a New York Times bestseller of over 1million copies.

Morgan Neville directs the film, which combines unseen and archive footage of the well-loved adventurer and provocateur and new interviews with those who knew him best, including restauranteurs David Chang and Eric Ripert, to give ‘an intimate, behind the scenes look at how an anonymous chef became a world-renowned cultural icon’.

Neville, who won a best documentary Oscar in 2014 for 20 Feet from Stardom, which looked at the experiences of back-up singers, has also compiled an impactful voiceover for the documentary from Bourdain himself.

Neville was also responsible for 2018’s Won’t You Be My Neighbour?, which examined the life of American children’s TV icon Fred Rogers, and became the top-grossing biographical documentary ever produced.

The trailer’s rock soundtrack well reflects Bourdain’s spirit and innate sense of cool, but it also looks as though the documentary will pack no punches when it comes to examining the chef’s struggles with his mental health, according to accounts hinted at here from his friends and colleagues.

Bourdain died by suicide in June 2018, at the age of 61, while shooting for his TV show Parts Unknown in France.

The chef had previously opened up about his mental health on the show, describing himself as ‘terrible at communicating with people I care about’ and sometimes struggling with being ‘super depressed for days’.
