Hugh Jackman reflects on alleged on-set behaviour of early X-Men films

Hugh Jackman has claimed there was behaviour on the set of the early X-Men movies ‘that would not happen now’ but feels things have positively changed in the industry.

The Hollywood star, 54, played Wolverine in the superhero franchise, which was directed by Bryan Singer in its early instalments.

In 2020, Halle Berry claimed she had clashed with Singer on the set of the 2014 X-Men film, Days Of Future Past, telling Variety the director was ‘not the easiest dude to work with’.

Australian performer Jackman has now reflected on his experience while filming the early X-Men movies, which shot him to stardom, with the first one being released in 2000.

‘This was my first movie in America, you gotta understand; it was all so new to me,’ he said in a new interview.

‘I think it’s fair to say that… there are some stories, you know. I think there are some ways of being on set that would not happen now. And I think that things have changed for the better,’ he said of Singer specifically.

Addressing the working climate on set more generally, he added to The Guardian: ‘There’s way less tolerance for disrespectful, marginalising, bullying, any oppressive behaviour. There’s zero tolerance for it now and people will speak out, and I think that’s great.’

A Hollywood Reporter article in 2020 had alleged crises on set, including ‘drug use, tantrums and a writers’ feud’.

Mystique star Jennifer Lawrence also seemingly threw some shade Singer’s way last year during a roundtable, having worked with him on three X-Men films, as she discussed working on a female-led movie.

‘It did always just make us laugh about how we ended up with, “Women shouldn’t be in roles like this because we’re so emotional”.

‘I mean, I’ve worked with Bryan Singer. I’ve seen emotional men. I’ve seen the biggest hissy fits thrown on set,’ she continued, adding that it was nice to get a break from ‘toxic masculinity’, she claimed.

Filmmaker Singer has also faced sexual misconduct claims in recent years, which he has repeatedly and strongly denied.

In a statement to Deadline in 2019, he said such reports ‘rehashed claims from bogus lawsuits filed by a disreputable cast of individuals willing to lie for money or attention’.

Asked if the allegations had tainted how he sees the films, Jackman said it was a ‘really complicated question’, explaining: ‘There’s a lot of things at stake there. X-Men was the turning point, I believe, in terms of comic-book movies and I think there’s a lot to be proud of.

‘And there’s certainly questions to be asked and I think they should be asked.’

However, he admitted that he didn’t ‘know how to elegantly answer that’ due to its ‘complex’ nature, but that ultimately he thought of his earlier years in X-Men ‘with pride at what we’ve achieved and what momentum that started’.

Jackman featured in a string of X-Men films and three stand-alone Wolverine movies, the last being 2017’s Logan, which was supposed to be his final appearance in the role.

However, it has been confirmed he will reprise the character for Deadpool 3, which stars his close friend Ryan Reynolds.

Jackman insists he was not ‘tortured’ by the idea of previously moving on from the character but said he agreed as he ‘just wanted to do it’, one of the attractions being that he would ‘get to punch the s**t out of Ryan Reynolds every day’.

Just this week, the actors engaged in another exchange as part of their jokey feud, with Jackman begging voters not to ‘validate’ the actor with a best original song Oscar nomination for one of his numbers in Christmas musical Spirited.

‘Ryan Reynolds getting a nomination in the best song category would make the next year of my life insufferable.

‘It would — I mean, I have to spend a year with him shooting Wolverine and Deadpool. Trust me, it would be impossible. It would be a problem,’ he shared.

The Wrexham AFC co-owner hit back on Twitter with: ‘Disagree. I think the deepfakes that sung and danced for Will and I would love to perform at the Oscars.’

He then added: ‘Also “Wolverine and Deadpool”, bub?’ in reference to Jackman’s implication that they might be making two movies together. has contacted a rep for Singer for comment.
