It appears we are witnessing the rebirth of rock on the UK singles chart, as Olivia Rodrigo’s Good 4 U is now the longest-reigning number one rock single in 18 years, claiming a fourth week at the top.
With more than double the chart sales of its closest competitor – The Weeknd’s Save Your Tears – Good 4 U’s 9.8million UK streams this week have helped make the pop-punk hit the longest-reigning rock-influenced chart-topper since 2003, when Evanescence reigned supreme for four weeks with Bring Me to Life.
In addition to Olivia’s success, two other tracks from the rock genre have pushed up into the top 40, perhaps signalling the end of pop and rap’s chart domination?
Most notably, Italy’s popular Eurovision winners Måneskin have climbed to number seven with their single, I Wanna Be Your Slave.
The Roman rockers – Damiano David, Victoria De Angelis, Thomas Raggi and Ethan Torchio – trounced their competition at the song contest, winning with 524 points for their song Zitti E Buoni.
As well as joining rock’s charge on the charts, we wouldn’t be surprised if sales of eye liner and pleather flares start to surge too.

Willow (formerly Willow Smith) is also new at number 33 with pop-punk track Transparent Soul ft. Travis Barker, which has rocketed up the top 100 in the past three weeks and is set to become her first UK top 40 single in 10 years since the heady days of Whip My Hair.
While rock has never fallen out of favour, the genre usually finds its strongest success in the album chart, with it becoming rarer in recent years for rock-influenced acts to succeed in the singles chart.
Bring Me The Horizon, Yungblud and rapper-turned-pop-punk artist Machine Gun Kelly have enjoyed several stints in the top 100 recently, but it’s a pretty significant moment to see three guitar-driven songs in the top 40 in 2021, two of which are firmly situated in the top 10.
Chief executive of the Official Charts Company Martin Talbot said: ‘It has long been anticipated that rock would one day return to the Official Singles Chart, but few would have expected it to be pioneered by an ex-Disney Channel actress and a Eurovision winning act.

‘But that’s what appears to be happening, thanks to Olivia Rodrigo and Italian Eurovision winners Måneskin.’
The top five is rounded out by Doja Cat’s Kiss Me More ft. SZA, Galantis, David Guetta and Little Mix with Heartbreak Anthem, and Olivia Rodrigo again with déjà vu.
Elsewhere Lorde returns with eagerly awaited new single Solar Power at number 17, her third top 20 hit in the UK, while Anne-Marie and Niall Horan’s Our Song climbs four to number 18, giving Anne-Marie her eighth top 20 single and Niall his third as a solo artist.
And with football fever running high following England’s strong start to Euro 2020, 25-year-old football anthem Three Lions by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner & The Lightning Seeds has re-entered the charts at 22 because would you expect anything different of the fans?
