Warning: spoilers ahead for The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 episode 8.
The Handmaid’s Tale viewers have expressed their relief after discovering what became of Janine (Madeline Brewer) in season 4 episode 8… while also sharing their sadness over her devastating situation.
Several weeks ago, fans of The Handmaid’s Tale watched as June (Elisabeth Moss) and Janine found themselves in the middle of a dangerous warzone in Chicago, running for their lives as gunfire rained down on them.
While former handmaid-turned-relief worker Moira (Samira Wiley) found June in the rubble and smuggled her to safety in Canada, where she was reunited with her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle), Janine was nowhere to be seen.
However, in the latest episode of season four, it was finally revealed that Janine survived the explosion and was taken back to Gilead.
Not only that, but Janine is now back under the watchful eye of the fearsome woman she and June escaped in the first place – the draconian Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd).

In the final moments of the episode, Aunt Lydia, who was berated by Commander Lawrence for her acts of aggression, has Janine placed back in her care.
While Janine is evidently in a dire situation, as she could have escaped to Canada with June instead of being transported all the way back to Gilead, fans were relieved to find out that she is still alive.
‘Janine is alive..i repeat (as I said last week she would be) Janine is alive,’ one person tweeted.
‘Janine! I knew it, hooray,’ another remarked.
Someone else commented that Janine has ‘more lives than the entire cast of Cats’.
Another stated: ‘I can’t believe that poor Janine has ended up back in the clutches of Aunt Lydia.’
In the final moments of episode eight, Janine, who’s lying on a mattress on the ground and has had her eyepatch replaced with a bandage, asks Aunt Lydia where June is.
Aunt Lydia informs Janine that June made it to Canada, much to Janine’s delight, who says that she ‘always knew’ June would escape.
Aunt Lydia questions Janine’s happiness, trying to convince her that June deserted her.
As Janine’s face drops, she begs Aunt Lydia not to make her a handmaid again, saying that she would ‘rather die’ than go back into service.
Knowing Aunt Lydia and Gilead, it’s extremely improbable that Janine’s wish would be granted.
So will Janine be forced back into becoming a handmaid once more? Or could she continue on with Mayday’s mission from the inside in an effort to bring down Gilead once and for all?
The Handmaid’s Tale returns next Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4 and is available to watch on All 4.
