An idyllic countryside cottage is up for sale for £700,000 – and it has some extras to justify that price tag.

What extras, we hear you cry?

Sadly, there’s no ball pit in this one.

What you would get, if you were to buy this house, however, is a cottage in a dreamy woodland setting, a garden with a footbridge over the beck, and your very own natural pool – complete with a mini waterfall.

Londoners and those who have spent lockdown without access to a garden, we know this is your dream property right now.

Known as Beck Cottage, the property was built as part of the Golden Grove Estate, then taken as a second home, along with a large tract of woodland, by the Turnbull family in 1950s.

Dreamy, right? (Picture: Tim Hardy Photography)

The Turnbull family, FYI, were a big deal at the time, known as one of the greatest names in Whitby during the town’s golden age of shipping and ship building.

The home was created from two adjoining sandstone cottages directly overlooking Cock Bell Beck, to form a single four-bedroom home with two internal staircases.

On the ground floor is a large sitting room with wood-panelling, exposed ceiling beams, and an open grate fire, plus the kitchen, which has its own pantry.

Also on this level is the boiler, a garden store, and the central dining room, with a staircase up to two double bedrooms and a bathroom.

The stairs from the sitting room take you to two more double bedrooms, along with a shower room.

There’s also a loft room, which you could turn into a fifth bedroom or a lovely home office.

There are plenty of original period features throughout the home, so fans of historical cottages will be pleased.

The outdoor space is just as lovely, of course.

Head outside and you’ll find a wooden gate within a stone boundary wall, which reveals a beck side pathway to a sunny terrace.

A footbridge over the beck leads to a further sitting area by the side of the water, plus areas of lawn bordered by trees and plants.

Then there are the wooded beck side grounds, which have fishing rights, and include a private natural pool with a waterfall.

In case that’s not enough, there are a further 51.62 acres of land lying to the east of the hamlet, bounded by a cinder track, a popular cycle path on the former railway line that once connected Whitby to Scarborough.

And there are 4.56 acres of paddocks, too.

If you’re keen on putting in an offer and escaping to the countryside, you can find out more through the Knight Frank listing.
