Often when people are looking for a new home, they want something with a little bit of ‘character’.

And you probably can’t get much more characterful, than a 19th century prison with cells and paraphernalia still in situ.

The historic building is now a three-bedroom home and is on the market for £200,000.

Once used as a lock up for crooks, the Grade-II listed Old Postern Gaol was built in 1842 and is said to have contained a courtroom used for three decades.

The former lock-up in Brecon, south Wales, has a picturesque river-side garden, the original basement cells, barred windows and iron doors.

It’s in need of some serious renovation but estate agents Clee Tompkinson & Francis say the property offers ‘an abundance of potential’.

They said: ‘The property currently offers grade II listed accommodation in the form of a three bedroom dwelling with 2 reception rooms, bathroom and kitchen all situated above what was the town jail with its cells and paraphernalia still in situ.

‘Altogether, the property as a whole offers great scope for complete renovation and refurbishment into a variety of different uses subject to the necessary consents.

‘A fantastic project to refurbish one of Brecon’s most iconic and historic buildings.’

Adjacent to the house is the former Brecon fire station, which was most recently used for horticultural storage.

It offers a further 608 sq ft (56.5m2) internal floor area and is connected to the house via an internal door.
