A planned scheme that would have made it mandatory for people to show their vaccination status in certain circumstances has been shelved.
Boris Johnson has confirmed there are no plans to make domestic ‘vaccine passports’ compulsory after a review.
Speaking at the Downing Street press conference, he said: ‘There will be no Covid certificate required as a condition of entry to any venue or event although businesses and events can certainly make use of certification and the NHS app gives a Covid pass as one way of showing your Covid status.’
The Government had been considering whether to force people to prove their vaccination status when trying to gain entry to big events like festivals and sports matches.
Plans to make people show their ‘passport’ when visiting pubs and restaurants had already been dismissed as unworkable.
Vaccine passports have been heavily criticised by privacy campaigners and businesses who said any such scheme would be difficult to implement.
Organisers of events may still implement their own entry requirements to ensure they are Covid free including asking for proof of vaccines or a negative test result – but it won’t be required by law.
Earlier this year, a petition against any planned vaccine passport scheme gathered more than 350,000 signatures on the Government’s website and was debated in the House of Commons in March.
Ministers are planning to lift all remaining lockdown restrictions on July 19, with the country expected to return to something like normality.
A vaccine passport may still be required for foreign travel, particularly as the EU has just introduced its own Digital Covid Certificate across all 27 of its member states.
In the UK, the NHS app already allows people to download a Covid pass which shows proof of vaccination, a negative test, or that someone has recently recovered from Covid.
It’s hoped this will soon be accepted as a form of vaccine passport for those wishing to travel to the EU and beyond.
