Exact date 15m Brits will be hit by hosepipe ban in London just after torrential rain and floods batter UK

THE exact date 15 million Brits will be hit with a hosepipe ban in London has been revealed.

Thames Water will ban Brits from using their garden hoses on August 24 in a bid to save water.

It comes after an “incredible deluge” wreaked havoc on homes and businesses yesterday.

Three inches of rain fell in just a few hours – with the Met Office warning fast-flowing water could pose a “danger to life”.

Those in low-lying properties were urged to make sure their valuable items are “ready to go”, or “on a higher level” due to the risk.

But the sudden downpour will do little to help drought-affected areas who suffered in last week’s heatwave.

Dry conditions make soil like “concrete” and incapable of absorbing anything meaning sudden downpours are the “wrong sort of rain” to replenish dry ground.

And today will be no better, as a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and “fast-flowing water” in in place across the south.

In a statement on its website, Thames Water added: “After the driest July on record, and below-average rainfall in 10 of the last 12 months, water levels in our rivers and reservoirs are much lower than usual.

“We have more teams reducing leakage than ever before, working 24/7 to find and fix more than 1,100 leaks every week.

“The recent heatwaves mean that demand for water is also at record levels.

“We’ve been working around the clock to supply everyone, and customers have been brilliant at saving water where they can.

“But, with low rainfall forecast for the coming months, we now need to take the next step in our drought plan.

“Everything we do now will help protect supplies next summer and help the environment.

“We know these restrictions impact your day-to-day activities around your home and beyond, and we’re grateful for your support.”
