The shocked officers then found the bodies of a man aged in his 60s and a woman in her 20s.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the couple, who had a young son, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Today detectives were still examining the scene in Buckland Avenue, Basingstoke, Hampshire for clues.

They say they have already arrested a 52-year-old man, who was known to the couple, on suspicion of murder.

Local residents revealed that the couple had been living at the property for some time.

Chris Watson said: “They had lived there for a few years and they had a little boy.

“We were woken up at about 2 in the morning by the police. It can’t be good news when you are woken up at that time in the morning so it was really scary.

“We used to see their little boy, he is about two or three years old, going up and down the hill on his trike. It is just dreadful, nothing like this has ever happened in the road before.

“They kept themselves to themselves but it is a family that is sadly no more and a little boy has lost his parents, it is just so sad.”

It was not yet known how the man and young woman were killed and post mortem examinations are to be carried out on their bodies by a Home Office pathologist at the North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke.

Police clad in forensic suits are still scouring the front garden of the bungalow for clues.

The couple’s car remains on the driveway and a single rose can be seen on the high hedges surrounding the house’s front garden.

Neighbours have confirmed that the suspect was arrested at a flat in nearby Sherborne St. John hours after the incident.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said on Sunday: “We are investigating a double murder which took place in the early hours of this morning in Basingstoke.
