Tributes to equestrian’s ‘bright star’ after Tiggy Hancock, 15, is seriously injured and dies at team training exercise

TRIBUTES have been paid to a 15-year-old show jumper who died after being seriously injured in a training exercise.

Tiggy Hancock – described as one of the sport’s rising stars – was taking part in the routine exercise when she fell at around 2pm yesterday.

The teen was rushed to hospital but sadly couldn’t be saved and died shortly afterwards.

Greenogue Equestrian Centre in Dublin has now led tributes to the talented horse rider and show jumper.

They said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the poor child. She was a star in the equestrian community and will be hugely missed.”

Devastated friends have also paid tribute to Tiggy on social media.

One wrote: “Rip tiggy …forever in our hearts”.


Another said: “Just the saddest news. Utterly heartbreaking for Tiggy’s family, her team ,friends and the equestrian community as a whole.

“There wasn’t a result sheet she didn’t top or a team she wasn’t on..outstanding young rider. RIP Tiggy.”

While one wrote: “RIP Tiggy, an incredibly talented young girl”.

Horse Sport Ireland described Tiggy as a “much-loved member of the equestrian community”.

They added: “Tiggy was a highly talented young athlete and a respected member of our Pony High Performance Eventing Programme.

“A keen equestrian for many years as a member of the Carlow and Kilkenny Hunt Pony Club and very successful Working Hunter Pony competitor, Tiggy only began Eventing in the autumn of 2018, making an immediate mark on the sport.

“The loss of a young person is all always particularly hard to comprehend. This will be a difficult time for team mates and friends in the sport. Horse Sport Ireland encourages them or their parents to come forward and seek support.

“HSI have a designated support person to assist individuals affected, if they are struggling with this terrible loss. Please email: [email protected]”.

Tiggy’s impressive career in show jumping and eventing led to her being part of Team Ireland’s bronze medal-winning team at the pony European Championships in 2019 with Coppenagh Spring Sparrow.

Police in Dublin confirmed an investigation into the teen’s death is ongoing and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

A garda spokeswoman added: “The Coroner has been notified of this tragic incident.

“The Health and Safety Authority have also been notified and will carry out an examination tomorrow, Thursday 17th June, 2021.”
