What crimes has Brian Field’s been convicted of?

Schoolboy Roy Tutill, 14, disappeared on July 23, 1968 on his way from Kingston Grammar School in Kingston upon Thames, London, to his home in Brockham, Surrey

He had got on a bus with some friends after school at 3.30pm but decided to get off later on in order to save money as he wanted to buy a bike.

Roy, as he often did, decided to hitch-hike the rest of the way home.

He was last seen in Chessington, London, trying to get a lift.

Roy’s parents, Dennis and Hilary, contacted the police when he didn’t arrive home that evening.

The body of the schoolboy was found by a policeman three days later outside the gates of Cherkley Court, in Mickleham, Surrey. He had been strangled and sexually assaulted.

Cops failed to make much headway in the case over the years despite it remaining open and regularly reviewed.

In December 1996, a partial DNA sample was recovered from samples taken from Tutill’s trousers, which had been kept in a freezer.

Field had a DNA sample taken after he was arrested for drunk driving in 1999 in Birmingham and after the sample had been analysed in 2000 a match was found to the DNA sample taken in Tutill’s case.

On 21 February 2001, police arrested Field at his flat in Birmingham.

He initially denied knowing Tutill or having anything to do with his death, although admitted to his historic sexual offences against boys.

After spending the night in the cells Field then confessed to the cops.

During his trial Field, then 65, pleaded guilty to murder but not sexual assault.

He was sentenced to life behind bars on February 21, 2001.

In the past Field had been fined for gross indecency in 1969 as well as serving a two-year sentence for the attempted abduction and indecent assault of a 14-year-old boy in Aberdeen.

He had also served two sentences in the 1980s of four years each for two counts of unlawful sex with underage boys and falsely imprisoning two teenage boys.

Where is Brian Field now?

Field’s present whereabouts are not known.

He could be still being held at Full Sutton prison in York.
