House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has accepted an invitation to the annual Group of Seven (G7) Speakers’ summit in Chorley taking place in September. Pelosi will be the best-known participant at the conference in the small Lancashire town.

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle will host the summit at Astley Hall from September 17 to 19, with the EU Parliament’s president and counterparts from France, Italy, Germany, Canada and Japan also set to attend.

The Speakers’ conference was announced on Friday, just a week after US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other heads of countries convened in Cornwall for the G7 leaders summit.

A topic on the table for the Speakers’ summit is protecting parliaments from terrorism, according to the Daily Mail. Pelosi and her counterparts are expected to exchange information, ideas and experiences on parliamentary matters.

‘With so many of our parliaments having experience of terrorist attacks and our Members facing threats, abuse and hostility from armchair trolls on social media, now is the time for us to join together to discuss how we can tackle such forces of evil,’ Sir Lindsay said.

‘How do we balance public access to Parliaments as well keeping Members and staff safe?’

The upcoming G7 Speakers’ summit will be Pelosi’s second visit to the UK in roughly two years. She spoke in London and visited the border with Ireland in April 2019.

Chorley was known during the Industrial Revolution for its cotton mills. The historic town now has a population of about 35,000.

‘I look forward to welcoming my counterparts to one of the most beautiful parts of the UK – to the town where I was born and brought up – to Lancashire and the North West,’ Sir Lindsay said.

The UK is hosting multiple international meetings in 2021 as it currently holds the G7 presidency.
