The US has gotten 70% of Americans ages 30 and over to take at least one Covid-19 jab, but is expected to miss President Joe Biden’s July 4 vaccination goal. Biden aimed to have 70% of Americans ages 18 and over with at least one shot by Independence Day, but that is not projected to happen, the White House announced.

Based on estimates, Americans ages 27 and over will hit Biden’s 70% target for vaccinations by July 4, White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Jeff Zients said during a news briefing on Tuesday.

‘We have met the president’s 70% goal for all US adults 30 and over,’ Zients said. ‘As for our goal of 70% for all adults, we’re going to hit it for adults 27 and over. This is amazing progress and has our country returning back to normal much sooner than anyone could have predicted.’

Zients continued: ‘Where the country has more work to do is particularly with 18- to 26-year-olds.’

The reality is that many young Americans believe that the coronavirus does not impact them and ‘they have been less eager to get the shot’, Zients said.

‘We think it will take a few extra weeks to get to 70% of all adults with at least one shot, with the 18- to 26-year-olds factored in,’ he said.

With the Delta variant spreading across the country, Zients stressed the importance of getting vaccinated to adults 18 to 26 years old.

The US is on pace to miss not just Biden’s first, but also his second aspirational goal for vaccinations by July 4. Biden also aimed to have 160million Americans fully vaccinated by the holiday. As of Tuesday, more than 150million Americans are fully vaccinated, representing more than 56% of the adult population.

‘This is important progress across the country and we will hit 160million no later than mid-July,’ Zients said.

Only 3million Americans were fully vaccinated when Biden took office in early January.

‘We are entering a summer of joy, a summer of freedom. This is cause for celebration and that is exactly what Americans will be able to do on July fourth, celebrate independence from the virus,’ Zients said. ‘But we’re not done’

Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said that the Biden administration’s 70% aspirational goal ‘is not the goal line nor is it the end game’.

‘The end goal is to go well beyond that, beyond July 4 and into summer and beyond with the ultimate goal of crushing the outbreak completely in the Untied States,’ Fauci said.
